Older Generation Flocking to Social Networks

By Colin 'breathe'
Heres a great article from Technolog on how older generations are adopting social networking.

Social Networking is generally seen as a teen activity but within the last fewyears there has been a surge in the number of older users joining social networking sites. The main reason is simply connecting with old friends or just the family. There are a number of ways the internet can aid the elderly, but access to their families as well as many commercial services, are the most useful.

"One of the main reasons for older adults' increased interest and use of social networking sites: They know Facebook and Twitter are where their kids and grandkids are spending time, and it’s a way to "bridge generational gaps."

Chilli

Ever in need a little chilli pick me up? Temptation in Brighton sells Chilli Chai! That’s right, you can buy one cup for £1.60, a pot for two for£2.00 or a pot for four for £4.00. Truly tempting. .! (bad pun I know)
2chilli1.jpg
Not only that but you can find a range of chilli preserves and pickles available to buy in store courtesy of Chillipepperpete, a local grower and distributor of chilli locally and to the wider market, remaining one of the largest importers of chilli in Europe. On offer you can find a range of condiments from Piri Piri Oil to Habenero sauce, ranging from£3.95 to £8.00. Don’t forget there is a brilliant opportunity to try these out for yourself as chillipepperpete will be featuring at the Brighton and Hove food and drink festival (don’t forget to get voting for your favourites!) as well as at the Fiery Foods UK chilli festival in Victoria Gardens, all coming up in September.

Brighton Markets

Now Brighton is a great place for local produce if you know where to look. Take a wander in North Laines on a Saturday and you might come across Brighton Street Market on Upper Garner Street. This location in the heart of the North Laines has been market site since the 1890’s and continues to be so until this day.Stalls are still selling innumerable items and objects, from watches to wardrobes and everything in-between, literally.
This historic site also plays host to local foods and you can pick up a tasty snack while you shop (its hungry work!) including a range of preserves courtesy if Chidlows Chutneys. Here you can pick up either a chilli relish or a hot chilli relish, or choose from a range of spiced fruits such as apple or plum (hot favourite)! Each jar will set you back £3 for around 300g or two for £6, three for £7.50 or four for £10. You can find these every Saturday in the market so why not pop along and try for yourself from complimentary tasters (advised!). Open every Saturday from 9am.

Local Produce

Get lost in a world of intoxicating smells and sights to match in Brighton Farm market open every Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Brighton Farm Market has been set up by the founders of the Farm Cafe using produce from their own farm in the cafe and market. This market, located in North Road is a haven of fresh local produce, from fish to flowers and, artisan bread. The marketplace also has a handy cafe tucked away at the back to recharge with a quick coffee or bite to eat.

2chilli4.jpg

A whole range of chilli related products can be found within this little market, if you’re more for a subtle infusion of chilli there is a selection of spiced mango and spiced apple preserves on offer by homemade, ranging from £2 to £4 a jar.

2chilli5.jpg2chilli6.jpg

Ouse Valley has a cracking range of jellies including a red chilli jelly at £4. If chilli jams and preserves aren’t your thing then fear not, the market also has the answer! If like me you try to incorporate chilli into as much every day food as possible then you’ll be delighted to discover than on offer is a wide selection of chilli sausages, reasonably priced, a plentiful variety of olives featuring varying spices and chillies, some (my favourite) are actually stuffed with the chillies themselves! Priced at £4.50 for a small tub and £5.50 for a large tub. Chilli cheeses can also be purchased of those who can’t get enough of the yellow stuff. (Or in this case, yellow and red).

Independent Film and Hollywood

By TomJKelly
Along with many of you I’m sure, I recently went to see ‘Inception’ at the Duke of York cinema.  I really enjoyed it, as I love films and art in general for that matter, which is inspired by the surreal and the unconscious mind.  I met the visual effects supervisor Paul Franklin a few days after watching the film and told him I saw his film as an Independent film with a Hollywood budget.  He thought this was true and we both agreed that, but for, Director, Christopher Nolan’s fantastic reputation he has built up over the years, this film would never have been green lighted by a Hollywood
Studio.

Inception.jpg

This left me thinking, what is an independent style of film?  Why did we believe that Inception had this Independent feel, although with expensive pyjamas?  I think the answer lies in the content and the artistic vision feeling uncompromised in its delivery. An independent film, or indie film, is a film that is produced mostly outside of a major film studio. The term also refers to art films that differ from most mass marketed films.

For example, when Mel Gibson was in pre-production on ‘Apocalypto’, he was insistent on the film being in Mayan with English subtitles, which put off most of the studios funding the project.  As Mel Gibson is a multi-millionaire he decided to fund it himself for the same kind of money he was looking for.  So that film became another independent film with a Hollywood budget.

apocalypto.jpg

Studio films sometimes lose their way during production due to power struggles between the director, writers and the moneymen.  It’s usually either down to the moneymen wanting to make the film more commercial and the director not wanting to lose his unique vision he has for the project.  The more powerful reputation the director has and by the same token, the money or awards that director has made, the more likely he will win this power struggle or sometimes even have it written into his contract.  I believe that for better or worse the final say should always go to the director, as the point of having a director is that you get someone’s singular consistent vision up on screen and not a mishmash of different ideas from lots of different people.  The director’s job is to listen to these ideas but be a filtering system, whereby the best ideas, which fit into the overall ethos of the film, are the ones that get used.

As an independent film director, I have not encountered this problem as I have always had the final say on my films.  This is because they are little to no budget productions where everyone involved is working for free.   The reasons they want to be involved is because the script is decent and they have spoken to me and believe I can take this decent script and make it into a good film.  The reason my vision has never been questioned is probably down to 2 main things; My personality which is very assured and due to the budget restraints, I tend to be working with crew and cast who haven’t got lots and lots of experience.  Thus, they are less likely to think they know better.

It would be nice to have the money to put into my films, but I would not enjoy having the power I have as director taken away from me during the middle of a production.  So I guess, like a lot of things, its always a balancing act.  This is why art films and indie films will always be around and have their admirers due their uncompromising style and ability to tackle issues that are not popular but may be important to some.

Coffee!

By Space Cowboy
COFFEE!

You can have it hot, cold, decaff, regular, espressos, lattes, macchiato, frappes, Americano, mocha...the list is endless. But if there’s one common element amongst coffee it’s that we cannot get enough of the stuff. It could be because we’re all hopelessly addicted to caffeine, or on a lighter note it’s a great beverage to enjoy and relax with friends, not to mention that priceless hangover coffee.
Brighton is home to the giants of the playing field; Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc, but we all know where they are and exactly what they sell. Brighton is also a goldmine of little independent cafes that are unsung treasures. I’m here to dig these out, or just to spread the word about a great new venue opening up. Sometimes these places don’t have websites or flyers etc so it’s very hard to get information about them, so I’m going round Brighton and trying to document as many of them as I can with a particular emphasis on iced coffee!

coffee1.jpgcoffee2.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you know the Brighton and Hove food festival is kicking off in September with awards going to the Best Restaurant, Best Food Pub, Best Cafe and Best Food Shop. With voting closing on September 10th I thought I’d check out some of the contenders, but not forgetting all the others!
Currently Temptations in Gardner Street is ranked 2nd, and personally I can see why. The atmosphere is warm and friendly – not to mention good looking waiters! They had a fine selection of iced beverages, but what made it really stand out was the diversity and choice that were available. Ice cubes, frappe, cream or no cream, your choice of syrups, you could even tailor which type of coffee and how many shots you wanted (all those late night coffees add up). Not only that but it had that magical ingredient of life – alcohol. If like me you’re into your coffee as much as your alcohol then alcoholic coffee is like a dream come true. The Baileys Frappe did have me drooling all over the floor, but fear not for when it gets truly cold as the warm selection of coffees featuring Baileys Latte, Irish coffee and even a Brandy Hot Chocolate for all you coffee haters (blasphemy!) is also in full swing. And with a loyalty card to reward you for addiction to coffee its no secret why it’s scoring high.
coffee3.jpgcoffee4.jpg
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right in the heart of the North Laines is the Brighton Coffee Co. Another coffee shop  with variety coming out of its ears, or erm chimney. This establishment comes with all the favourites; cream, a choice of a number of shots (when you really need a kick!) also a large size, a selection of syrups at a respective 40p, ice cream in the shake based drinks, a choice of frappe (blended) or just ice cubes and again a that wonderful thing that is a loyalty card so you can justify buying coffee 5 times a day. This place is a well recommend venue to have a drink and chat with friends. With a delicious menu to back it, it’s a clear favourite.
coffee5.jpgcoffee6.jpg
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little coffee shop slightly off the beaten track down Tidy Street (sounds like a place from Disney doesn’t it?) is a little cafe called Rock Ola which first and foremost scores 10 out of 10 for decor. It fuses rock chic-ability with 50’s glamour, think Grease meets those restaurants with half of cars coming through the walls. Amazing. And with a link to the record shop next door, you definitely feel as if you’ve been transported to some old school world of diners and cool kids. The tagline is; ‘Hard Rock Cafe comes to Brighton well almost!!’ it even has a 60’s jukebox which is free to play.
Not only is this place from a parallel dimension of cool but for £2.50 you can get an iced coffee blended with ice cream with cream included. Not bad eh? Highly recommended for a drink, but definitely one for enjoying with friends/lovers, takes you back to a movie you watched but were never in.
coffee7.jpgcoffee8.jpg
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been travelling around the North Laines and came up with this checklist for you to suss out which place has got what and drink. Hopefully this should give you a rough idea of where to go for what you want and prevent you endlessly travelling from shop to shop!

Chilli!

By Space Cowboy
CHILLI!
chilli-1.jpg As this being the bubble for chilli, I thought I couldn’t pass up n opportunity to investigate what’s called ‘the world’s hottest chilli’ where is it you ask? No, not in India or Thailand but right here, in Hove. Burger off has developed a burger so hot that customers have to sign a disclaimer saying they won’t sue poor old Nick (the owner) before they even take a bite. This action results from the numerous hospital trips it has caused. The burger is claimed to be; “six times hotter than the world's hottest pepper, the nagga jolokia(COR), and three times spicier than police issue pepper spray.” Impressive, although it does beg the question why these burgers haven’t been used as weapons. Watch this space. Its notoriety was also reported on, carrying a caption of; “Hove burger so spicy it carries a health warning.” I shall be squaring up to this burger in a standoff at some point, with all hilarious consequences - I’m sure - caught on camera for your enjoyment. Around 700 people have signed up to test this burger, with the majority failing miserably. A collection of YouTube videos provide sufficient evidence of this.
-------------------chilli-2.jpg--------------------------------------------------------------------------
chilli-3.jpg     Now all of us love a bit of chilli, and what better way than to have chilli on tap by growing it? Take a wander down North Laines and you can find chilli and pepper plants for sale. All the hard work is already done so if you’re a busy person all they need is some love and a bit of water for you to sit back and reap the benefits. Alternatively, you can find fresh local organic chillies in the Infinity foods shop, also in North Laines. If you love fresh fruit and veg of any kind then Taj will no doubt spring to mind but there’s also this great little organic supermarket right in the heart of the North Laines. chilli-4.jpg
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As part of the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink festival, chilli lovers all over Brighton will be put to the test this coming September 18th & 19th when Fiery Foods UK Festival descends to Brighton to host an epic chilli eating competition! The winner is to receive a nice £50 in return for pain, blood, sweat and tears. Seems about right to me! chilli-5.jpgThe FFUK Pub Heats are commencing soon all around Brighton, Hove and Sussex with the first of the heats commencing on September 4th. I for one am taking part for another round of pain and suffering with Pub Heats in and around local Brighton Venues. More are to be posted soon so keep checking back as I will keep updating the dates and venues as they are decided. Needless the say the disclaimers are out in force and its everything to play for! Not only is the chilli eating competition a highlight of the festival but Victoria Gardens in Brighton is playing host to the National Chilli Awards Amateur Hot Sauce Category! Which means good news for us chilli lovers as there with be a vast array of all things chilli – sauces, pickles, chocolate and even cocktails- all to the judged by people with names like Darth Naga. You know someone means business with a name like that!

Has it cost you your soul?

By Colin 'breathe'
About 80% of people are unhappy at work, and 20% are happy. Our culture has separated work from passion, and taught us to prefer a higher paycheck to higher happiness.

That mistake costs us our souls. The goal of career development is to uncover one's gifts and passions, and to link them to the practical needs of the world. We call that "being in the right place," "finding a good fit," or "making the best use of one's talents."

Work is love made visible. —Kahlil Gibran

Breathe@Playgroup Festival 2010

By Robleblob
'Twas a beautiful day in a field. Tunbridge Wells sat but two miles over yonder, and all kinds of wonderful people had started to come out and play, when up popped a huge, shiny, silver tent. Atop this tent sat a piece of incredible facial furniture, fit only for someone with a face the size of a skip (and I'm not talking crisps) to sport upon their upper lip.

It was the first ever Playgroup Festival, and the Breathe Brighton moustache tent was ready to go!

Our aim was simple. We drew people in, away from the feast of activities and many musical delights, to set them challenges. We provided a nice furry 'tash of their choosing for those who passed, and sweets as means of consolation for those unlucky enough to fail. We then convinced many that this website was indeed the way to go in order to further immerse themselves in the already bustling social scene which encapsulates our diverse city.

Each challenger would step inside and sit down in front of one of our many glamorous hosts. They would pick up an envelope at random and pull out a card, on which they found their designated challenge. It was then down to them to attempt to complete the challenge they had been set, in order to win themselves a moustache, the respect of many Playgroup festival-goers, and the hearts of those of us running the tent. The challenges started off as a bit of innocent fun, but after a short while myself and a Miss Jade Taffe were asked to take on the job of writing new challenges. Here are a few slected moments from what ensued over those next three days:

1- Colin having to filter each set of new challenges. As the beer flowed, we started to cross the line between political correctness and really-not-ok. It then led to us having to create seperate challenge piles for children and adults, so as to save many children from having to streak.

2- The fact that on creating the streaking challenge, somewhere deep in my male subconscience, a part of me was surely hoping that this challenge would fall into the hands of a complete goddess of a woman. As it was, only men received the challenge, except for one woman who found a man to take her place, and a woman who most of us missed because we were distracted from watching a very big bicycle.

3- Walking into the tent to find Benny Ellis sitting in the hosts chair. Before him sat the sweetest little girl, who had been set the challenge of 'convince me that you're  inside a washing machine' She went on to make big motions with her arms whilst exclaiming 'All the clothes come and get stuck on my belly and then POOF!' thus drawing a big AWWW! from all of us. She then stood on the table proudly displaying her moustache, looking like a minature Des Lynam.

4- The fact that on no less than three occasions I had to come and turf people out of our foil covered tent. The reason being that they were truly 'feeling the festival spirit' shall we say. They stood staring vacantly into the shiny silver abyss, slowly rubbing their hands down the side. One in particular had the look of a man convinced he was a leftover chicken wing from a barbecue who had to be immersed in this foil, as it was nearly time for him to be put into the fridge and saved for another day.

5- And finally, the woman who misread 'Perform a sex act with one of our wicker mats'. She promptly went over and knelt on the wicker mat which Colin was standing on, threw back the tails of his shirt and went to unzip him, a very startled Colin jumped back with a loud 'Woah woah woah! The woman, now corrected in her ways, proceeded to lie face down on the mat and dry-hump it.

For anybody who missed the festival, you missed out on some incredible bands, talented performers and very big bicycles among other things! For those of you who were present, please, feel free to share your stories and festival highlights with us below! If you were one of the lucky moustache winners, tell us, how did it work out for you?

Hope you're all having a beautiful summer! -Rob
